History
At the turn of the 20th century, immigrants, mostly Irish, Jewish, and Italian, flooded into the Bronx thanks to the extension of the Subway system. Gang activity and organized crime was active during the prohibition, and from 1940 on into the 60s, most of the white, European residents left the borough, leaving a large Hispanic and Black population. The borough has undergone a sea of change in terms of crime and poverty, beginning in the early 90s, with new residential developments and increased economic activity. The National Civic Leage designated the Bronx an All American City in 1997.

Ash,
It may go without saying but having a good job help. It opens doors to finding apartments, building a community, and (hopefully) funding your lifestyle. BUT finding a job out here when you’re not an American can be really tricky. Find people from your area/field/social circle who have moved here or used to live here and ask them how they did it. And keep checking back here, we’re always coming up with more advice!

Hello. I skimmed across your site by mistake but was excited that I did. My mother and some others have recently started a significant amount of online research about apartments in Italy and where to stay and other misc. Finally, thanks for the advice – glad I found it by mistake and will definitely utilize. Using research I started organizing info about Florence apartments in my blog.
